Luna tells all.: The aloha

katie rose has a rocking blog going on, who knew?

Luna tells all.: The aloha: "I think a drummer I met that night, then dated for a summer and I had sex in the bathroom, but I think we were both too drunk to accomplish the deed or known if we had. Did I sleep on the floor of that beer sodden place? Looking at the carpet here so many years hence I shiver to think I may have and hope that even then I knew better."

PressThink: Laying the Newspaper Gently Down to Die

PressThink: Laying the Newspaper Gently Down to Die: "The Project for Excellence in Journalism, in its invaluable report on the state of the news media today, puts it this way: 'If older media sectors focus on profit-taking and stock price, they may do so at the expense of building the new technologies that are vital to the future. There are signs that that may be occurring.'

Newspapers in 2004, for instance, increased their profits at double the rate (8%) that their revenues grew (less than 4%), according to the Newspaper Association of America, a distinct sign of profit-taking. The industry remains highly profitable. Margins averaged 22.9% in 2004, according to the analyst Lauren Fine, and are expected to rise in 2005. The investment in online publications, though, where the size of the profits is still fairly modest, remains by most evidence cautious."

Whiskey Bar: Kissing the 4th Amendment Goodbye

Whiskey Bar: Kissing the 4th Amendment Goodbye: "while the Cheney administration claims Section 215 has never been used to search or seize library records, a 2002 survey of librarians found that almost half of them reported being visited by federal or local law enforcement agents demanding access to patron records.

Confronted with these results, the Justice Department insisted the vast majority of those visits were related to criminal investigations, but refused to disclose how many were terror-related, saying that information was (you guessed it) classified."

Other business ventures of Mr. Roberts are a printing company in Minnesota and a Toyota dealership in Manchester, Tenn.

A noted artist, John Roberts is well-known for his chainsaw woodcarvings. He also practices holistic dentistry.

Red Line shut for suspicious package

this was a pain in the butt yesterday.
There was no one from CTA or CPD directing commuters to the re-routed redline; I just figured it out myself, before spending an hour on the train.
worst part was, my ipod died early in the commute

Red Line shut for suspicious package

By Kyra Kyles
RedEye
Published July 19, 2005

A report of a suspicious package left on the platform of the CTA Red Line station at Roosevelt Road and State Street caused an underground station evacuation and rerouting of subway service for approximately 40 minutes on Monday, according to Carlos Herrera, police spokesman.

According to Herrera, police received the call about a suspicious package around 4:52 p.m.

CTA spokeswoman Sheila Gregory said that during the incident, Red Line 'L' service was rerouted to the elevated tracks and the subway station at Roosevelt and State was evacuated of employees and customers.

Members of the police bomb and arson as well as the canine unit reported to the scene and investigated a package near a garbage can, according to Herrera.

The package was determined to be an item left behind by an unidentified passenger, and underground service at the station was restored shortly after 5:30 p.m., Herrera said."

Venezuela Has Oil Money, And Chavez Sings His Tune: "Riding on a tide of record prices for Venezuelan oil, Chavez -- who has survived both a brief coup and a recall referendum -- now appears to be consolidating public support, using the economic windfall to expand social programs for the poor and to intensify what he calls a 'peaceful revolution' against global capitalism"

Clinton calls for federal game regulation - PlayStation 2 News at GameSpot

oh, please
Clinton calls for federal game regulation - PlayStation 2 News at GameSpot: "Not stopping there, Clinton said she would soon author a bill to create a federal law that would 'put some teeth into video game ratings.' Reminiscent of a California bill introduced by Assemblyman Leland Yee (D-San Francisco) and similar measures in several other states, the legislation will 'prohibit the sale of violent and sexually explicit video games to minors' and make such action a federal offense. Clinton said the penalty for violating the law would be a mandatory $5,000 fine."

Kennedy Rebukes Santorum for Comments

Kennedy Rebukes Santorum for Comments: "Based on statistics publicly reported by many of the country's 195 dioceses, the Boston-based lay activist group BishopAccountability.org has calculated that the highest percentage of abusive priests from 1950 to 2003 was in the diocese of Covington, Ky. Boston was among the 10 worst dioceses, but several other cities commonly regarded as liberal culturally and politically had relatively low rates of abuse. Just 1.6 percent of San Francisco's priests have been accused of abuse, for example, compared to more than 4 percent nationwide."

Full Disclosure: Not exactly nonunion: "Southwest, despite its low operating costs and cheap fares, is the most heavily unionized of all the major U.S. airlines. Some 80 percent of its work force is represented by labor groups.
